Not only are Pastor Steve Anthony and the rest of the folks at the Cowboy Church of Branson up and running during the winter, they’re also looking at expanding the ministry with a new location.
After spending time at several theaters around town, the Cowboy Church of Branson relocated to the King’s Quarters Hotel, across the street from the Mansion Theatre on Expressway Lane, in hopes of finding a building of their own.
“When I became pastor, we decided, I’m not one of these guys that likes to rent,” Anthony said. “You know, all the rent they’ve paid over 15 years, they could have had their own building to use whenever they wanted to, to have service whenever they wanted to, to have special sings and all kind of other things.”
According to Anthony, they are currently in the act of purchasing a building of their own, which would also allow the church to host more folks, something Anthony said was instrumental in growing the ministry.
He also said a building of their own will allow Anthony and company to better serve the community.
“I could have a program on Friday, or Wednesday, whenever we need to do something,” he said. “We’re kind of looking for more people from Branson to come on board.
“The church was originally designed for tourists, but we we’re working to expand and get the word out to locals that we are a ‘regular meeting’ church.”
The Cowboy Church of Branson has become a huge part of Anthony’s life over the past few years. After becoming an accomplished singer and songwriter in his own right, the Wisconsin native made his way to Branson.
After hearing about the Cowboy Church, then under the direction of Al Martin and his wife Norma Jean, through a friend, Anthony decided to check it out for himself. He soon became the praise and worship leader. “Al really loved me,” he said. “So he kept me on for a couple of years.”
Due to personal issues, the church split into two factions. Norma Jean kept her services at the God and Country Theatres while the new church, led by Martin, moved to the old Circle B building under the name of the Cowboy Church of Branson.
When Martin died in 2014, the church began looking for a new pastor.
“They couldn’t find anyone to fit the bill because you just can’t pastor Cowboy Church like you do regular church,” Anthony said. “They tried all different kind of preachers and one day they asked me to deliver a message.
“I talk between all my songs anyway, so I prayed about it and gave my first message.”
After that, Anthony began regularly delivering messages and eventually became an ordained minister. In January, he took over operations of the church.
“I knew I had to have a goal, and a vision for the church,” he said. “So I prayed about it and decided to do it.”
As far as the decision to hold church year-round, Anthony said it began several years ago. When he first arrived in Branson, he was involved in a service called “Grand Ol Gospel Hour” and was shocked to see so many of the churches closing alongside the theaters.
Anthony said his own vision for the church was one that is open year-round, and filled with locals and tourists alike.
“When we first started having church every Sunday through the off season, everyone told me it wouldn’t work because there wasn’t enough people in town to draw a crowd,” Anthony said. “Right now we’re getting several locals and that’s what I was hoping because we really want to increase the size of the church.”
“Because of the ‘Cowboy Church’ name, people aren’t scared,” he said. “It’s non-denominational, it isn’t the ‘Church of Such-and-Such,’ you know, this is come as you are. You don’t have to play dress up, or put a tux on.”
